In recent years, several well-known public figures have spoken openly about the emotional and identity changes that accompany becoming a mother. This is important as it expands the discourse on perinatal mental health.

Although they may not use the word matrescence, many of their reflections describe exactly this developmental transition — the profound psychological, relational, and embodied changes that unfold as women move into motherhood.

Like adolescence, matrescence reshapes identity and self-understanding. It can bring joy, meaning, vulnerability, and unexpected emotional complexity.

When women in the public eye describe their experiences, their words often resonate with mothers everywhere who are navigating similar changes.

Motherhood in the Public Conversation

Adele on Identity and Motherhood

Singer Adele once reflected that becoming a mother changed her understanding of herself in unexpected ways. She described motherhood as both grounding and disorienting — a powerful shift that altered how she viewed her priorities, creativity, and personal identity.

Many mothers describe a similar experience: the sense that life has fundamentally shifted, and that the person they were before motherhood is now evolving into something new.

Beyoncé on the Transformation of Motherhood

Beyoncé has spoken about the profound emotional and physical experience of pregnancy and birth, especially following a difficult pregnancy and emergency delivery with her twins.

In interviews and public reflections, she described feeling humbled by the experience and deeply aware of the strength and vulnerability that coexist in motherhood.

Her reflections highlight something central to matrescence: motherhood often deepens a woman’s connection to her body, her relationships, and her sense of purpose.

Meghan Markle on the Emotional Complexity of Early Motherhood

In a widely discussed interview, Meghan Markle spoke candidly about the emotional challenges she faced after becoming a mother, including feelings of vulnerability and the importance of support.

Her comments resonated with many women because they acknowledged something that is often left unspoken: early motherhood can be both joyful and emotionally demanding.

Recognizing this complexity is an important part of understanding matrescence.

Kylie Jenner on Becoming a Young Mother

Kylie Jenner has also described how becoming a mother at a young age shifted her sense of identity and priorities. She has spoken about how the experience brought both responsibility and a new sense of meaning to her life.

Even when motherhood begins early, the developmental process of matrescence still unfolds as women integrate the identity of mother into their broader sense of self.

Understanding the Transition

Across different backgrounds and life circumstances, the experiences described by many mothers share common themes:

• identity shifts

• emotional vulnerability

• new priorities and purpose

• deepened relationships

• personal growth

These themes are all part of matrescence, the developmental transition into motherhood.

Understanding matrescence helps normalize the wide range of emotions and changes that accompany this stage of life.

Supporting Women Through Matrescence

Motherhood is not only the birth of a baby — it is also the birth of a new identity.

With understanding, support, and space for reflection, women can gradually integrate the many changes of this transition and develop what I sometimes call the MotherSelf — the evolving identity that grows as women move through motherhood.

Clinical Reflections

Motherhood is not only the birth of a baby — it is also the birth of a new identity.

Across cultures and generations, women have described the powerful emotional and psychological changes that accompany becoming a mother. Today, when public figures speak openly about these experiences, their reflections often resonate with mothers everywhere.

These experiences are part of matrescence — the developmental transition into motherhood. During this time, women gradually integrate the identity of mother into their evolving sense of self, what I sometimes describe as the emergence of the MotherSelf.

Understanding matrescence can help normalize the emotional complexity of this transition and highlight the importance of support, reflection, and compassionate care during the childbearing years.

At Heartlife Holistic, I explore matrescence as part of a broader approach to perinatal mental health, identity development, and embodied well-being during the childbearing years.
